chicken pox 3

chicken pox 3, originally uploaded by dgcroadie.

So I came back from tour, and unfortunately we ended up with the plague home instead.

Upon my return, I ended up with the Norovirus (Norwalk, like on the cruise ships). So I was tired and out of commission for a few days due to gastro intestinal issues... (no further description will be given, but you can probably figure it out).

Once I got over that, Jennifer started feeling very VERY ill. What started as a fever and nausea turned into Adult Chicken Pox. Poor wife.... Chicken pox as an adult is very evil and Jennifer suffered immeasurably. Fortunately, we went to the doctor in time to get her on an anti viral medication which reduced the lenght of the illness. But in the meantime I was enlisted to be mister mom for about 7 days while mom was sick and could not touch baby. Boy did we bond well...

Unfortunately, the quarantine protocol did not save poor Evangeline from the sickness. She ended up getting very sick with Chicken Pox about 10 days ago. As a child, she suffered so badly because she was too young for anti viral medication and because she did not get the antibodies from her mom during gestation as mom never had it as a child. All we could do was give her tylenol for the fever and pain and give her lots of colloidal oatmeal baths. We were able to put a bit of calamine lotion on, but only before the blisters started to break and only in areas that she could not reach with her hand.

Evangeline could not wear a nappie during this time because of the open sores and the possibility of infection. So we carted her around on incontinence pads for about a week. She was in rough shape... If she was awake, she was crying and when she slept, she would not be put down. So Jennifer and I began shift work as one of us was always up with her. We were like two ships passing in the night as she went off shift and I went on... It was all we could do. We tracked her food and temperature as well as medicine intake.

A few days ago, the fever broke and our young baby is turning the corner back to normalcy. We are so happy for her. It was heartbreaking to deal with her pain when there was very little we could do besides comfort her.

We are now getting back to normal life here. And we are glad. More posts to follow now that we are back up and running as a family.

The end of the rainbow

I am home. We are all three, wife child and me.

The world is right again. Now to reap the rewards of our labour.
